Premium pricing belongs on premium hardware for premium users. If your digital life consists of glorified web browsing and light app tapping, a Chromebook Plus will do thisfor a fraction of the cost. If you need a little bit more horsepower, there's the MacBook Neo and ARM powered Windows laptops. But once a buyer drops $1,000 or more on a machine, they expect serious hardware back-end support.

OEM's that are launching Googlebooks upon launch

Even Google’s own Gemini couldn't spin the narrative when grilled on the software requirements for popular bachelor’s degrees. The essential, industry-standard applications students rely on—often heavily discounted to hook them early—are hardly to be found on Googlebook OS.

Students will be forced to have a second laptop or desktop, or settle for watered-down alternatives that lack both industry accreditation and student pricing.

Locking in young users early builds decades of ecosystem loyalty. Google needs big-name developers in its corner before launch, or at least binding promises of incoming software support. While PR blog posts promising "Adobe suite access" initially seemed vague, recent updates—including clarifications from Mishaal Rahman on Reddit—note that Adobe Photoshop is categorized as 'Made for desktop' apps. These versions provide unique features optimized for Googlebook and strictly adhere to Android's large-screen development guidelines, offering a somewhat more reassuring outlook for Adobe's presence on the platform.

For professionals the same applies. People in these fields need industry standard software, wether these mobile apps will suffice for them, I highly doubt it.

These are the most popular bachelor degrees in the US, along with the key software that is needed in these degrees according to Gemini and whether or not it will be useable in Googlebook OS.

Degree Field

Key Software

Primary Use Case

Googlebook Compatibility

1. Business

Microsoft Excel (Desktop), Tableau Desktop, Power BI, SPSS

Financial modeling, advanced formulas, macros/Solver, business intelligence dashboards, statistical analysis

Poor (Web/Android Excel lacks VBA/Solver/Power Query; Tableau Desktop & Power BI require native Windows)

2. Health Professions

Complete Anatomy 3D, EHR simulation software, SPSS/R, Microsoft 365

3D human anatomy visualization, electronic health record training, epidemiology statistics, clinical reports

Moderate (Android anatomy apps work; EHR simulators run in browser; dedicated clinical testing/lab tools may not)

3. Social Sciences & History

Zotero / Mendeley, SPSS, Stata, R / RStudio, NVivo

Academic citation management, quantitative survey analysis, econometric modeling, qualitative text coding

Good to Moderate (Web research/Zotero work well; RStudio can run in Linux container; native SPSS/NVivo are unavailable)

4. Biological & Biomedical Sciences

ChemDraw, GraphPad Prism, PyMOL / ChimeraX, ImageJ / FIJI

Chemical structure drawing, biostatistics, 3D macromolecular visualization, scientific image analysis

Poor (ChemDraw and Prism lack full-featured web/Android versions; Linux workarounds are cumbersome for lab work)

5. Psychology

SPSS, R / RStudio, PsychoPy / E-Prime, Qualtrics

Experimental behavioral design, participant survey collection, behavioral and statistical data modeling

Moderate (Qualtrics is web-based; R can run via Linux; native SPSS and hardware-interfacing tools like E-Prime will not run)

6. Engineering

SolidWorks, AutoCAD / Revit, MATLAB, ANSYS, Visual Studio

3D parametric CAD modeling, civil/architectural drafting, numerical computing, finite element simulation, embedded systems code

Unsupported (Engineering CAD and simulation packages strictly require native x86 Windows and direct GPU hardware drivers)

7. Computer & Information Sciences

VS Code, Git / GitHub, Docker, JetBrains IDEs (IntelliJ, PyCharm), Figma

Source code editing, version control, containerized deployment, compiled language development, UI/UX prototyping

Moderate (Figma runs in browser; coding tools/IDEs work via Linux container, but lacks native Windows/macOS convenience)

8. Visual & Performing Arts

Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Blender

Vector illustration, page layout, digital painting, video editing, motion graphics, 3D computer animation

Poor (Full Adobe Creative Cloud and desktop 3D/video suites are unavailable; mobile/web versions lack required feature sets)

9. Education

Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Canva, Learning Management Systems (Canvas, Blackboard)

Lesson plan development, classroom slide decks, student grading and assignment submission

Excellent (Workflows are entirely cloud-, browser-, or Android app-based; ideally suited for Googlebook OS)

10. Communication & Journalism

Adobe Premiere Pro, Audition, InDesign, Photoshop, DaVinci Resolve

Video news packages, broadcast audio/podcast editing, newspaper/magazine editorial layouts, digital photojournalism

Unsupported (Media production syllabi require full desktop non-linear editors and layout suites unavailable on Android/Chrome engines)

Looking at a matrix so heavily crimson offers little comfort. Without concrete developer commitments, this hardware is destined to be bypassed by the very power users its price tag targets. Again, Google needs to absolutely reach out to these developers and companies.

CapCut is another one making a “Made for Desktop”app for Googlebook OS. While hardly an enterprise standard, it proves software vendors can deliver real desktop tools when motivated. Yet heavyweights like Adobe and Blackmagic Design aren't breaking a sweat over losing market share on this new OS i would guess.

Custom widget creation is one of the cool AI features.

The European rollout across the UK, Germany, and France begs me to ask “What about AI?”. Because Googlebook OS will have a number of AI features, EU regulatory restrictions may strip out flagship AI features like Spark—yet Google plans to charge full price regardless, mirroring the Pixel 11 strategy.

Paying top dollar for a crippled device may be a a tough sales pitch against ARM Windows laptops, a MacBook Neo, or a MacBook Air. Until Google secures real software commitments, Googlebook OS remains a compromise.
